Confidence to Draw Near to God [Part 2]

By — July 18, 2017

Are you ready for some good news?

You don’t have to wait until you’ve cleaned yourself up before you come to God. You can come as you are, right now – no matter what.

Today’s Text: “For we do not have a high priest who is unable to sympathize with our weaknesses, but one who in every respect has been tempted as we are, yet without sin. Let us then with confidence draw near to the throne of grace, that we may receive mercy and find grace to help in time of need.” (Hebrews 4:15–16, ESV)

A dear parishioner used to struggle fiercely with pornography and sex addiction. He had tried everything but couldn’t seem to escape the clutches of his besetting sins; until he began to grasp the Gospel of grace.

He’d been a Christian for years. He loved the Lord. He served faithfully and gladly in the church. But he never could seem to lay hold of the deep power of God to break the bondage; until he had a revelation from Hebrews 4:16: “Let us then with confidence draw near to the throne of grace, that we may receive mercy and find grace to help in time of need.”

This is what the dear brother heard in his heart: “…. with confidence draw near to the throne of grace … in time of need – instead of after it.”

Shame had always taught him the opposite. The voice of shame murmured: “You can’t come near God like you are; you need to clean up first.”

But, he realized, he didn’t need help after he was tempted; he needed help while he was tempted. He saw something utterly beautiful and powerful: God welcomed Him right in the middle of his worst, most sinful thoughts.

Your entrance into the throne room of grace (the very presence of God) does not depend at all upon your righteousness. If it did, you wouldn’t be allowed into the throne room at all. You’d never be righteous enough. Your privilege of being in the presence of God depends solely upon the forgiving, cleansing blood of Christ, which makes the believer reckoned righteous in God’s presence. Therefore, because your place in the throne room of grace has been merited by Christ alone, it takes your righteousness out of the picture. Whether you’re having a wholesome day or are in your most despicable hour of sin, you can come into God’ presence by the blood of Jesus alone.

So you might as well come.

You can come into the throne room any time – ANY TIME – including when you are at your worst. And He’ll give you mercy and grace. And that’s the Gospel!
