Boundless Life [Part 2]

By — November 08, 2017

Are you ready for some good news?

The same grace that saves you empowers you.

Today’s Text: “So she went from him and shut the door behind herself and her sons. And as she poured they brought the vessels to her. When the vessels were full, she said to her son, “Bring me another vessel.” And he said to her, “There is not another.” Then the oil stopped flowing. She came and told the man of God, and he said, “Go, sell the oil and pay your debts, and you and your sons can live on the rest.”” (2 Kings 4:5–7, ESV)

In the touching miracle account of the widow who had nothing but a jar of oil, God continually multiplied the flow of oil for the needy woman until she had no more empty containers. It’s a beautiful picture of God’s boundless provision.

I’m especially drawn to the concluding exhortation from Elisha to the widow: “Go, sell the oil and pay your debts, and you and your sons can live on the rest.”

The supernaturally supplied oil first paid all her debts and then provided for her daily life.

The same oil that pays the debt gives life.

The gift of God’s grace pays your debt and gives you life.

Too many Christians act as if they are saved by grace but mature by their own disciplines.

Ever had a spat with your spouse that was interrupted by a phone call or a visitor? Amazing how you can suddenly be gracious with the interrupter and then return to your conflict with no grace. A lot of people think God is like that – that He is really gracious to save the sinner but really hard on the saved.

Friend and mentor Dudley Hall laughingly says that when he was a young Christian there were times he wished he could just go back to being unsaved so He could get back into good grace with God, ha! See the folly of such thought?!

God’s grace isn’t just for the sinner; God’s grace is for the saved. The same oil that pays the debt provides for the abundant life. And that’s the Gospel!
