I Just Want to Thank You Jesus [Part 1]

By — November 23, 2017

Are you ready for some good news?

“I just want to thank you Jesus” might be the most eloquent praise you can ever bring to God.

Today’s Text: “Give thanks to the Lord, for he is good, for his steadfast love endures forever.” Psalm 136:1, ESV

There are some seminary professors who feel it is their responsibility to tear down the overly simplistic, pietistic faith of the evangelical students. I had one such professor who once mocked the simpletons who pray, “I just want to thank you, Jesus.” The teacher’s mockery bothered me because I was one of those simple-minded pietists!  I know what the theologian was trying to communicate. He was trying to urge us toward a loftier manner of speech to God.

But it’s Thanksgiving Day and here’s what I have to say: “I just want to thank you, Jesus.”

Despite my professor’s mockery, there is profound depth to “I just want to thank you Jesus.” Allow me to exegete it for you.  “I”: that means that it’s intensely personal. It is not a theoretical gratitude; it is an intimate, real feeling. “Just”: if I do nothing else, this one thing I want to do. It means if I don’t have lofty words or theological acumen, I still have something to say. “Want”: That means I have this as my own deepest desire. “Thank you”: my gratitude has a personal connection not to a distant deity, but to “you.” “Jesus”: I have a personal relationship with the Lord of all. The One who died for me and lives for me has a name. His name is Jesus.

If you can’t think of any eloquent words to share before your Thanksgiving meal today, might I suggest, “I just want to thank you Jesus.” The Lord is good and His steadfast love endures forever. And that’s the gospel!
