Nothing But the Blood [Part 1]
By Alan Wright — March 29, 2018
Are you ready for some Good News?
If you ever have a day when you struggle to see or celebrate your God moments, you can always recall your greatest God moment of all – the cross.
Today’s Text: “The blood shall be a sign for you, on the houses where you are. And when I see the blood, I will pass over you, and no plague will befall you to destroy you, when I strike the land of Egypt.” (Exodus 12:13, ESV)
The centerpiece of the Gospel, the cross, is also the epicenter of all your God moments. The cross is foolishness to the modern mind, a stumbling block to the Jews, and unpopular for the spirit of the age. But no other God moment makes sense unless you have grasped the wonder, scandal and transformational power of the cross.
And, if you want to understand the cross, I recommend that you start with the Hebrew festival of the Passover.
Today’s broadcast shares part one of an imaginative retelling of the final plague against the Egyptians. Stiff-necked Pharaoh repeatedly rejected God’s mandate to let the cruelly enslaved Hebrews loose from their bonds. So the Lord leveled a final plague against the tyrant and his pagan land. The firstborn children of the Egyptians would die on the dark night of the fourteenth of Nissan. But, the Lord promised, wherever there was blood painted over the doorposts of a home, the Destroyer would “pass over.”
The Hebrew slaves were saved by the blood of an innocent lamb.
They weren’t judged according to their merits. They weren’t spared because they had been righteous. They weren’t “passed over” because they had been less sinful. They were judged only by the blood of the lamb.
The distinction between the Egyptians and the Hebrews came because of a simple, but extraordinary, revelation: the blood of the Lamb is sufficient for salvation. There was nothing that could save anyone, Egyptian or Hebrew, on that ominous night. Nothing… but the blood.
Your greatest God moment happened over 2000 years ago as the Savior of the world hung voluntarily on a Roman timber to shed His blood on your behalf. The Gospel announcement is a revelation of the saving power of Christ’s Calvary blood. When you receive and believe the revelation, the blood of Jesus is applied over your life and the Destroyer cannot claim you. You live and do not die. That’s your greatest God moment and that’s the Gospel!
