Vision leads to obedience, not vice versa!

Today’s Text: “Where there is no prophetic vision the people cast off restraint, but blessed is he who keeps the law.” (Proverbs 29:18, ESV)

Every follower of Christ is called to glad obedience to Him, but the focus of the Christian life is not “obey, obey, obey;” the focus of the Christian life is “vision, vision, vision.” God wants you to see Him. He wants you to see all that is possible by His grace. As you gain His vision, obedience follows.

Vision determines behavior. That’s why Proverbs 29:18 contains two parallel statements. The second statement is parallel, but contrasting to the first statement. When people have no vision, they have no discipline toward a meaningful goal. But when people have clear vision, their lives align toward that sense of purpose. The one who has vision, becomes obedient to the vision. And, when that sense of purpose is from God, the one who beholds the divine vision is naturally moved to obey accordingly.

One summer while vacationing at the beach my extended family became trapped in a seaside restaurant amidst a frightening thunderstorm that shut down the electricity and flooded the narrow street leading to the restaurant. When we finally made our attempt to leave, I stopped the car in front of a low area in the road that was so badly flooded that I deemed it unsafe to cross. For a long time, we just sat in the car (and other family members sat in their car behind us). We couldn’t move forward but we surely couldn’t stay there all night. The lightening was still crashing around us. We were stuck.

Eventually when the lightening became more distant, my adventurous niece got out of the car to explore possible pathways out. She returned from her water-wading expedition with a possibility: if we pulled into the parking lot of the adjacent boathouse, proceeded with caution about 100 feet, then drove up onto a grassy embankment and then left on a driveway, we could get beyond the flooded area of the main road.

Suddenly we had vision. We could escape – woohoo! So, I carefully crept through the parking lot, up the grassy embankment and out to safety not because I was doggedly determined to be obedient but because I had a new vision of the pathway to life. People of vision obey and, in that obedience, are blessed with new freedom. And that’s the Gospel!
